Alternate for Adobe OpenFlash to render the charts in Dashboard Designer

Adobe will end support of Flash Player on December 31, 2020. Also, major browsers will no longer support Adobe Flash. Our reporting stack - Pentaho Dashboard is based on Adobe Flash.

What is the alternate for Adobe Openflash to render the charts in Dashboard Designer?

Pentaho Server 5.x to 9.x

By default, the Pentaho Dashboard Designer will be using the OpenFlashChart.  If you want to change the OpenFlashChart, you can switch to the JFreeChart libraries.

To configure this, the following steps need to be followed:

  • Stop the Pentaho Server.
  • go to the location ..\server\pentaho-server\pentaho-solutions\system\chartbeans\chartbeans_config.xml
  • Here comment out the line below:
<!--<default-chart-engine>OpenFlashChart</default-chart-engine> -->

and add this:

In the same file, comment out the following line:

<!--<bean id="FlashChartEngine" class="org.pentaho.chart.plugin.openflashchart.OpenFlashChartPlugin"/>-->
  • Save the changes.
  • Clear the browser cache completely.
  • Restart the Pentaho Server and your Pentaho dashboard designer will now use JFreeChart.
  • There is no need to install Adobe Flash
