(Resolved) Pentaho BA Server - Use of Non-Canonical URL Paths for Authorization Decisions - Versions before 9.4.0.1 and 9.3.0.2 Impacted (CVE-2022-43939)

Overview

The software defines policy namespaces and makes authorization decisions based on the assumption that a URL is canonical. This can allow a non-canonical URL to bypass the authorization. (CWE-647)

Products Affected

Pentaho Business Analytics Server versions before 9.4.0.1 and 9.3.0.2 impacted.

Description

Pentaho Business Analytics Server versions before 9.4.0.1 and 9.3.0.2 contain security restrictions using non-canonical URLs which can be circumvented.

Impact

If an application defines policy namespaces and makes authorization decisions based on the URL, but it does not require or convert to a canonical URL before making the authorization decision, then it opens the application to attack.

Action

The defect may be mitigated now by defining a more restrictive set of authorization filters in the security configuration of the product.

We recommend you upgrade to the Pentaho Business Analytics Server version 9.5 release or newer. For version 9.3 this may be resolved with Service Pack 9.3.0.2 or newer, or for version 9.4 with 9.4.0.1 or newer.

Please review the Pentaho End-of-Life policy to ensure you are up to date.
